Congenital developmental lumps:
- Thyroglossal cyst:
- Most common, usually in younger children
- Usually, slow growing but can rapidly increase in size after a recent URTI
- Midline
- Moves upwards with swallowing and protrudes with tongue
- Dermoid cyst:
- Midline
- Tethered to the skin, doesn’t move upwards
- Branchial cyst:
- Children and young adults
- Swelling in the lateral part of the neck
- Lymphangioma (cystic hygroma):
- Present from birth
- Posterior triangle
