Treatment Plan
Conservative:
– Symptom management:
– Pruritus: chlorphenamine
– Nausea/vomiting: metoclopramide/cyclizine
– Consider cholestyramine and ursodeoxycholic acid
Prevention measures:
– Avoid school: 7 days post jaundice onset
– Personal/family hygiene
– Safe sex practices
– Avoid raw foods/tap water when travelling
– Offer vaccination to high-risk individuals (travellers going to high-risk areas, people with
chronic liver disease, IVD users, homosexuals and occupational)
– Check pre-vaccine serology (IgG) in certain groups to see if immunisation is needed (in those coming from high-risk areas, history of hepatitis or Jaundice, homosexuals)
– If at risk of exposure and immunity not known (give vaccine with booster 6-12 months later)
– Safe to use vaccinations in pregnancy
Monitoring:
– LFTs – Bilirubin
– Prothrombin time (>5s indicates severe hepatitis, >50s suggests acute hepatic failure)
Prognosis
– 85% recovery within 3 months
– No long-term sequelae
