Prevention & Prognosis

Prevention:
– Protective clothing: Full-length, loose
– Insecticides on doors/bedsheets
– Avoid dusk/dawn exposure

– Chemoprophylaxis options:
Suppressive treatment: Continue 4 weeks post-return
– Chloroquine: OTC, start 1 week before
– Doxycycline: Start 1-2 days before, prescription required
– Mefloquine: Start 2-3 weeks before, prescription required

Prognosis
It is a medical emergency requiring prompt recognition, investigation and treatment.
