Treatment Plan
Conservative measures:
- Humidified air
- Simple cough syrups
- Encourage coughing (for a moist cough)
Medical management:
- Codeine syrup
- Morphine (Consider antiemetics and laxatives with opioid use)
- Saline nebulisers
- Mucolytics: carbocysteine (contraindicated in peptic ulcers)
– Stop mucolytics if there is no improvement within 4 weeks
- Review/adjust ACE inhibitors if causative COMPLICATIONS
- Haemodynamic instability
- Vessel rupture
- Subconjunctival haemorrhage
- Epistaxis
- Haemoptysis
- Stress incontinence
- Hernias
- Vomiting
- Muscle strain
- Syncope
- Headaches
- Pneumothorax
