DEFINITION
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP)
• Most common in the first trimester
• Hyperemesis gravidarum: severe form with prolonged symptoms
PREVALENCE
• Onset: 4-7 weeks of gestation
• Peak: 9-16 weeks
• Resolution: typically, 16-20 weeks
• Onset after 11 weeks suggests an alternative diagnosis
ETIOLOGY
• Associated with pregnancy
• Severe form (hyperemesis gravidarum) linked to increased placental mass
