- Burns: tissue damage from thermal, electrical, chemical or radiation exposure Categories: complex and non-complex burns • Non-complex burns (90% of burns):
- Adults: partial thickness thermal burns >15% body surface area o Children: >10% body surface area o <1 year: >5% body surface area
- Deep partial thickness burns <1% body surface area
- Complex burns:
- All chemical/electrical burns o Thermal burns of critical areas or:
- Adults: >15% total body surface area
- Children: >10% total body surface area
- <1 year: >5% total body surface area
- All chemical/electrical burns o Thermal burns of critical areas or:
4 MAIN TYPES
- Thermal (heat): scalds, flame injuries, contact burns
- Electrical
- Chemical: corrosive agents that usually result in deep dermal/full thickness burns
- Radiation
SEVERITY DEPENDS ON
- Age
- Critical area involvement
- Location/extent/depth of burns
- Comorbidities
- Inhalation injuries
