Red Flag Symptoms Requiring Urgent Referral
- Decreased visual acuity
- Painful red-eye
- Ophthalmia neonatorum (red eye with discharge in <28 days old)
- Trauma/foreign body
- Herpes simplex with vesicles around the eyes
- Herpes zoster with tip-of-nose lesions
- Associated systemic conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome
- Periorbital/orbital cellulitis
Prognosis
Generally self-limiting with good response to treatment.
