Symptoms & Prognosis

Symptoms

• Bone marrow failure: pallor, lethargy, SOB
• Neutropenia: mouth/throat/skin infections, fever
• Thrombocytopenia: spontaneous bruising, heavy bleeding
• Organ infiltration: lymphadenopathy (>50%), hepatosplenomegaly (70%), bone pain, skin infiltration (AML only), testicular enlargement
• Respiratory symptoms from mediastinal lymph node infiltration
• Gum hypertrophy

Prognosis

• Childhood ALL: 88% 5-year survival – Adult ALL: 40% 5-year survival
• AML <55 years: 40% 5-year survival
• AML >55 years: <20% 5-year survival
