ETIOLOGY

• Caused by HSV type 1
• Transmitted through direct contact with infected secretions
• Virus remains dormant in the trigeminal nerve ganglion
• Can reactivate, causing secondary infections

RISK FACTORS

• Immunocompromised status
• Previous HSV infection
• Age under 5 for primary infection
