Cold sores (herpes labialis):
- Prodromal symptoms: fever, sore throat, lymphadenopathy
- Tingling and burning sensation
- Vesicles that rupture, ulcerate, crust and then heal
- It typically affects the lower lip
- No scarring
Gingivostomatitis:
- Sore throat
- Drooling
- Painful ulcers in the oral/pharyngeal mucosa
- Yellow-grey mucosal covering
- Crops of ulcers
