TREATMENT PLAN

Conservative:

• Avoid precipitating factors
• Symptomatic treatment

Topical treatments:

• Anaesthetic (lidocaine)
• Benzydamine (contraindicated in pregnancy/breastfeeding + risk of angioedema/broncho & laryngospasm)
• Antimicrobials (chlorhexidine – risk of brown staining of teeth/doxycycline rinse – contraindicated in pregnancy & <12 yrs of age)

If the above are ineffective:

• Topical corticosteroids (beclomethasone spray/hydrocortisone) – risk of oral candida infections
• Short-term oral corticosteroids
• Oral vitamin B12 (regardless of B12 status)
