TREATMENT PLAN
Conservative:
- Self-limiting condition
- Analgesia
- School attendance permitted if well enough
Antivirals indicated for:
- Immunocompromised patients
- Recurrent gingivostomatitis
- Frequent/persistent/severe lesions
- Options: acyclovir (all ages), valaciclovir (>12 years only)
Referral/admission criteria:
- Severe dehydration
- Inability to swallow
- Severely immunocompromised, requiring IV treatment
- Special advice needed for prophylaxis
