Definition, PREVALENCE & ETIOLOGY
DM Definition:
Persistent hyperglycaemia or random glucose >11 mmol/L
PREVALENCE

ETIOLOGY
Multiple types:
– Type 1: Autoimmune destruction of islet cells in the exocrine pancreas – Type 2 – Gestational
– MODY: Autosomal dominant, non-ketotic disease
– Drug-related: corticosteroids, antipsychotics
– Secondary to organic conditions: Cushing’s, pancreatitis, pancreatic surgery, trauma, acromegaly
– T1DM: Insulin secretion deficiency due to autoimmune destruction
– Peak Age onset between 6 months – 5 years & again at puberty
– Age <30 years
– BMI <25
– Personal/family history of autoimmune conditions.
