DEFINITION, PREVALENCE, ETIOLOGY
DEFINITION
A chronic cardiac condition characterised by impaired cardiac function
Classification: New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class 1-4
PREVALENCE
The average age of diagnosis is 76 years old.
50% reduced ejection fraction, 50% mild/non-reduced ejection fraction
EJECTION FRACTION CLASSIFICATION
Preserved (>50%), Mildly Reduced (41-49%), Reduced (<40%)
ETIOLOGY
– Myocardial dysfunction: coronary artery disease
– Valvular: aortic stenosis
– End-stage renal disease
– Pericardial issues
– Congenital heart disease
– Arrhythmias: AF
– High output states: Anaemia, thiamine deficiency
– Other: obesity
– Drug-related: alcohol, CCB, cocaine, NSAIDs.
