DEFINITION, PREVALENCE, ETIOLOGY & RISK FACTORS
DEFINITION
Type 2 diabetes: chronic metabolic disorder characterised by HbA1c >48 mmol/mol (>6.5%) or random blood glucose >11.1 mmol/L or fasting blood glucose of >7 mmol/L Associated with insulin deficiency and resistance
PREVALENCE
One of the most common chronic diseases in the UK
Increasing prevalence in children
ETIOLOGY
Deficient insulin secretion with increased insulin resistance
RISK FACTORS
– Long-term corticosteroid use
– Poor diet
– Obesity
– Family history (15% risk with one parent, 75% risk with both parents)
– Asian, African and African-Caribbean descent
– History of gestational diabetes
– PCOS
– Metabolic syndrome.
