SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

• Well-defined erythema in the nappy area
• Scattered papules
• Itching – Pain and distress – Can progress to:
• Skin erosions
• Oedema
• Ulcerations

INVESTIGATIONS & DIAGNOSIS

• Clinical diagnosis
• Swabs if suspecting candida/bacterial infection

TREATMENT PLAN

Conservative measures:

• Frequent nappy changes
• Use breathable/absorbent nappies
• Clean with alcohol-free wipes
• Keep the area dry
• Avoid irritants (soaps)
• Barrier protection cream for mild cases

Medical treatment:

• Hydrocortisone 1% cream (max 7 days) if inflamed
• Topical imidazole (clotrimazole/miconazole) if candida suspected/confirmed
• Flucloxacillin 7 days if bacterial infection suspected/confirmed
