SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
- Well-defined erythema in the nappy area
- Scattered papules
- Itching – Pain and distress – Can progress to:
- Skin erosions
- Oedema
- Ulcerations
INVESTIGATIONS & DIAGNOSIS
- Clinical diagnosis
- Swabs if suspecting candida/bacterial infection
TREATMENT PLAN
Conservative measures:
- Frequent nappy changes
- Use breathable/absorbent nappies
- Clean with alcohol-free wipes
- Keep the area dry
- Avoid irritants (soaps)
- Barrier protection cream for mild cases
Medical treatment:
- Hydrocortisone 1% cream (max 7 days) if inflamed
- Topical imidazole (clotrimazole/miconazole) if candida suspected/confirmed
- Flucloxacillin 7 days if bacterial infection suspected/confirmed
