TREATMENT PLAN
Urgent referral required for:
- Red flag symptoms
- Fever
- Suspected maltreatment
- SUFE
- Positive X-ray findings
Conservative management for:
- Osgood-Schlatter: rest
- Sever’s disease: usually resolves in 2 weeks or months
PROGNOSIS
DDH: risk of long-term hip pain and OA if untreated
Osgood-Schlatter: self-limiting, resolves with growth
Severs: self-limiting
KEY INFORMATION
- Prompt diagnosis is crucial for SUFE to prevent avascular necrosis
- Consider safeguarding in unexplained presentations
- Night pain suggests serious pathology
- Age-specific approach is essential for diagnosis
EXTRA’S
SUFE may be linked with endocrine abnormalities, including hypothyroidism Discitis in neonates: presents with back arching during nappy changes.
