Definition
- Blepharitis: A Chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelids
- Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca): Chronic condition with fluctuating severity
Prevalence
- Blepharitis: Common in primary care
Etiology
- Blepharitis:
- Anterior: Inflammation of eyelashes/anterior margin, result of bacterial infection
(Staph aureus) or seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Posterior: Result of inflammation of the meibomian glands – Can present with a mixture of both – Dry Eye Syndrome:
- Decreased tear production
- Increased tear film evaporation
