Conservative:
- Self-limiting conditions
- Warm compresses
- Lid massage
Medical management:
- Topical antibiotics are used if associated with conjunctivitis
- Treat underlying blepharitis/rosacea
- Hair follicle plucking for external styes if trained
Referral:
- Internal styes
- External styes not responding to treatment
- Red flag symptoms
Prognosis
Chalazion: resolves spontaneously within days with conservative treatment Stye: usually resolves in 5-7 days with rupture and drainage
