DEFINITION
- The sensation of the room spinning
- Can be peripheral or central in origin
PREVALENCE
- BPPV, Meniere’s and vestibular neuronitis most common in primary care
ETIOLOGY
Peripheral causes:
- BPPV: positional, short-term, recurrent
- Meniere’s disease: quadruple symptoms
- Vestibular neuronitis: associated with nystagmus, positive head impulse test
- Labyrinthitis: post-viral, sudden onset with hearing loss
Central causes:
- MS
- Cerebral tumours
- Stroke/TIA
- Vestibular migraine
