TREATMENT PLAN

TREATMENT PLAN
Conservative:

• Keep your ear dry and clean
• Acetic acid drops (7 days)
• Aural toilet if obstruction present
• Simple analgesia

Medical:
Topical antibiotics:

•  Gentamicin (contraindicated if TM perforation)
• Ciprofloxacin
• +/- Corticosteroids (if no fungal infection is suspected)

Antifungals:

•  Clotrimazole
• Chloroxylenol

Oral antibiotics:

• If severe infection
• If spread beyond the canal
• If systemically unwell

Referral:

• Urgent: malignant otitis externa, sepsis, systemically unwell
• Routine: recurrent/chronic cases, immunocompromised patients
