Prognosis
Usually self-limiting 1-3 weeks
Full recovery expected
Complications:
Short-term:
• Sepsis
• Perforations with bacteraemia (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter)
• Dehydration
Long-term:
• Post-infectious IBD
• Reactive arthritis
• Humanistic urethritis syndrome (Shigella)
• Guillain-Barré syndrome (Campylobacter) = global weakness or proximal & distal
limbs, CNS & respiratory symptoms, occurs 1-3 weeks post diarrhoea but most make
a full recovery.
