Treatment Plan
Conservative:
• Rehydration therapy crucial
• Oral rehydration sachets
Medical:
• Loperamide/bismuth (short-term – max 2 days)
- Avoid if severe abdominal pain, fever, or bloody stools
- Avoid in children
• Clarithromycin for Campylobacter if needed, ciprofloxacin is an alternative
• Metronidazole for giardia
• Ciprofloxacin or cefotaxime for Salmonella if NOT a mild case
• Ciprofloxacin or azithromycin for Shigellosis if NOT a mild case
• High-risk travellers: prophylactic antibiotics
Prevention:
• Personal hygiene
• Food hygiene
• Water hygiene
