Treatment Plan & Prognosis
Treatment Plan
– Conservative measures:
• Lifestyle measures
• Increase fluid intake
• Increase fibre intake
– Disimpaction regime:
• Osmotic laxative (Movicol/laxido/lactulose) for 2 weeks
• Add stimulant laxatives (Senna) if needed.
– Maintenance (post-disimpaction or just as a regular laxative for normal constipation):
• Regular Macrogol +/- stimulant
Prognosis
– Complications:
• Anal fissures
• Haemorrhoids
• Perforations
• Obstructions
• Soiling
• Rectal prolapse
