DEFINITION
- Inflammation of breast tissue
- Can be lactational or non-lactational
- May or may not be infected
PREVALENCE
- Common in breastfeeding women
ETIOLOGY
Lactational:
- Poor infant attachment
- Decreased frequency/duration of feeds
- Tight clothing/breast pressure
- Staph aureus (if infected) Non-lactational:
- Underlying breast abnormalities
- Trauma
- Immunosuppression
