IMPORTANT ASSOCIATED TYPES
- Early menopause (40-45 years)
- Premature ovarian insufficiency (<40 years)
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
- Perimenopausal symptoms:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Vasomotor symptoms: hot flushes, night sweats o Sleep disturbances o Fatigue o Decreased libido o Genitourinary symptoms o Fibromyalgia
- Vaginitis (vaginal atrophy)
INVESTIGATIONS
FSH measurements indicated for:
- Age >45 with atypical symptoms
- Age 40-45 with symptoms
- Age <40 with suspected premature ovarian insufficiency
- Age >50 using progesterone-only contraception Diagnostic criteria:
- FSH >30 on 2 occasions, 4-6 weeks apart Additional tests: LH, testosterone, oestrogen, TSH
