Definition
- COPD: Progressive, not fully reversible obstructive lung disease
- Comprises emphysema and chronic bronchitis
- Chronic bronchitis: Cough and sputum production for ≥3 months in 2 consecutive years
Prevalence
- 4th leading cause of death in the UK
- More common in males
Etiology
- Smoking: 90% of smokers are susceptible to COPD
- Genetic: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
- Other: Asthma, occupational/environmental factors
