Conservative measures:
- Rest
- Adequate fluid intake
- Simple analgesia – Steam inhalation
- Vapour rub
- Salt water gargling
- Saline nasal drops
Additional options:
- Cough medications
- Nasal decongestants (contraindicated in under 6 years and pregnancy)
When to seek further advice:
- Symptoms persisting >5 days
- Prolonged fever not responding to treatment
- Severe symptoms requiring urgent attention
Prognosis
- Self-limiting condition
- Usually resolves without complications
