Signs & Symptoms

Harmful drinking manifestations:

• Depression
• Accidents
• Pancreatitis
• Cancers: breast, liver, bowel, mouth
• Cardiovascular diseases
• Hypertension
• Alcoholic liver disease
• Liver cirrhosis

Severe complications:

• Wernicke’s encephalopathy: thiamine deficiency causing ataxia, confusion & ocular
motility disorder
• Korsakoff’s psychosis: amnesia, confabulations, disorientation
• Avoid alcohol in pregnancy:

• Miscarriage, preterm deliveries and stillbirths
• Foetal alcohol syndrome (having more than 5 units of alcohol a day in
  pregnancy) = causes growth deficiencies, neurobehavioral issues and
  characteristic facial features of FAS
