Treatment Plan

Non-drug:

• Early referral to memory clinic/secondary care essential
• Cognitive stimulation therapy
• Group therapies
• Cognitive rehabilitation
• Occupational therapy

Drug treatments:

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors:

• Donepezil
• Rivastigmine
• Galantamine
• Used as monotherapy for:
  • Mild-moderate Alzheimer’s
  • Vascular Dementia
• Donepezil + Rivastigmine:
  • Lewy body dementia
• If wanting to change the dose, seek specialist advice first

Memantine:

• For moderate Alzheimer’s when ACE inhibitors ineffective
• Severe Alzheimer’s
• Vascular dementia with comorbid conditions

Antipsychotics for non-cognitive symptoms:

• First generation: haloperidol
• Second generation: risperidone
