Treatment Plan

Primary Episode:
• Present within 5 days of onset

o Standard: Acyclovir 400mg TDS for 5-10 days
o Immunosuppressed: Acyclovir 400mg 5x daily for 7-10 days Recurrent Episodes (<6/year):

• Acyclovir 800mg TDS for 2 days or
• Acyclovir 400mg TDS for 5 days
• Immunosuppressed: Acyclovir 400mg TDS for 5-10 days Frequent Episodes (>6/year):
• Acyclovir 400mg BD
• Immunosuppressed: Acyclovir 400mg BD-TDS
• Consider dose increase/duration extension for breakthrough episodes Self-care:
• Simple analgesia
• Topical anaesthetics
• Avoid sex until the lesions clear
